Special of the Month October: RumiAdd Hoof Valent!

Updated: Jan 21

Claw health: More than just claws!

Healthy claws are the key to a well-run cattle farm. Cows with healthy claws move effortlessly from the bedding area to the feeding area. This leads to better performance and less health problems. Claw problems are very diverse and not always immediately visible. Claw health depends on several factors, including nutrition, stress, enviroment and infection pressure.

Claw diseases: infectious and non-infectious:

Claw diseases can be roughly divided into infectious and non-infectious diseases.

Infectious diseases:

  • Inflammation between the claws

  • Stinky paw

  • Mortellaro

These conditions are influenced by the cow's immunity, in which nutrition plays a role, and by the infection pressure.

Non-infectious diseases:

  • Whiteline defect

  • Sole bleeding

  • Sole ulcers

For these conditions, the stress and enviroment, combined with nutrition, have an impact.

Enviroment and infection pressure

The role of housing and infection pressure can be influenced by creating an optimal environment.

Some important measures:

  • Drying and cleaning slats and cubicles

  • Minimal obstacles in the stable

  • Avoid pivot points on milking parlors, milking robots and feeding stations

  • Sufficient and clean lying areas

Nutrition and Minerals

Nutrition is certainly not the solution to all claw problems, but a well-balanced ration can certainly contribute to optimal resistance and healthy claws. Besides matching the right roughage and concentrates to keep the rumen working well and healthy. We should not underestimate the influence of minerals. Important minerals for healthy claws include zinc, copper, manganese, and biotin.

Absorption of minerals

However, providing these minerals is no guarantee that the cow will be able to use them. There is a big difference in the absorption of minerals. Usually it is assumed that there are two types of minerals are: organic and inorganic. It is widely known that organic minerals are better absorbed, making it preferable to choose organic minerals for better effects.

Organic minerals:

However, there is a big difference between organic minerals. Organically bound means that the mineral is bound to a molecule containing carbon, such as proteins and amino acids. Amino acids are again preferred in this, as they have a stronger bond than proteins and thus remain better coupled in the rumen and gut environment.

‘So just the term ‘organic’ no longer appears to be sufficient for good absorption’

Amino acids:

Among amino acids, there is a distinction between essential and non-essential amino acids. By choosing essential amino acids, the absorption of the mineral is increased. Absorption differs despite binding to a (non-essential) amino acid. These are not always absorbed well. When the bound amino acid is not needed, it will pass the gastrointestinal tract as easily as inorganic minerals. Essential amino acids are always needed and will therefore also be better absorbed. So just the term ‘organic’ no longer seems sufficient for proper absorption.

RumiAdd Hoof Valent

Therefore, in addition to practical tips to promote claw health, RumiVar has also developed a new product developed: RumiAdd Hoof Valent. In this product, all minerals are bound to essential amino acids, directly resulting in better intake and better results in the barn.

Results in the stable:

  • Up to 35% fewer claw problems

  • Reduction in SCC

  • Positive effects on fertility and milk production

Provide the best possible environment for your animals:

  • Fresh and tasty nutrition

  • Avoid overcrowding

  • As few turning points as possible

  • Good and accessible bedding

  • A clean and dry environment

  • A good mineral supply.

RumiAdd Hoof Valent, like our other products, was created by the needs and conditions we encounter in practice. In addition to our minerals, we can also help in the barn by working with your compound feed advisor to identifying risk factors for claw health.
